IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) helps eggs and sperm fertilise in a lab, then places the embryo in the uterus — a proven path to pregnancy.
Eggs are retrieved
Fertilised in the lab
Embryo is transferred
IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) is a fertility treatment in which eggs are retrieved from the ovaries, fertilised with sperm in a laboratory, and the resulting embryo is transferred into the uterus. The word ‘in vitro’ means ‘outside the body’ — fertilisation happens in controlled laboratory conditions rather than naturally inside the fallopian tubes.
IVF is one of the most effective and thoroughly researched fertility treatments available today. It is recommended when other treatments have not worked, or when a medical diagnosis makes natural conception unlikely. For a detailed explanation of how IVF works, see our guide: learn more about the IVF process. You can also read about how IVF compares to IUI and ICSI to understand your treatment options.
IVF isn’t one-size-fits-all. At Kanaa Fertility, we recommend it only after a thorough fertility evaluation of both partners — so your treatment fits your diagnosis, not a template.
Tubal damage that blocks natural fertilisation.
Significantly lowers natural conception chances.
Low AMH or antral follicle count.
Low sperm count, motility or morphology — ICSI treatment if sperm quality is a concern
No clear cause found after 1–2 years of trying.
Repeated losses — PGT testing may help.
When IUI cycles haven’t led to pregnancy.
Early low ovarian function; donor eggs may help.

Initial Consultation & Fertility Evaluation
A detailed review of your history plus baseline fertility tests, to design your personalised plan.
Your first appointment involves a detailed discussion of your medical history, previous treatments, and fertility goals. We arrange baseline blood tests (AMH, FSH, LH, estradiol), a pelvic ultrasound, antral follicle count, and a semen analysis for your partner. Results are reviewed with you at a dedicated consultation. Learn about fertility tests before starting IVF.
Ovarian Stimulation
Carefully dosed hormone support over roughly 10–14 days, tracked with regular scans.
You will receive hormone injections over 10–14 days to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. The dose and type of medication is carefully calibrated for your age, ovarian reserve, and response. Regular monitoring ultrasounds and blood tests track follicle development and hormone levels throughout this phase.
Egg Retrieval (Ovum Pick-Up)
A short, guided procedure to collect your mature eggs once the follicles are ready.
When follicles reach the ideal size, a trigger injection is given. Egg retrieval is performed 34–36 hours later as a minor day procedure under sedation. A thin needle is guided through the vaginal wall to retrieve the eggs — patients typically experience minimal discomfort and return home the same day.
Fertilisation in Our Embryology Lab
Egg and sperm are combined in the lab — with ICSI used when sperm quality needs extra help.
Retrieved eggs are examined by our embryologists and combined with prepared sperm for fertilisation. In cases where sperm quality is a concern, ICSI treatment if sperm quality is a concern — a single sperm is injected directly into each egg. Fertilisation is confirmed the following day.
Embryo Development
Embryos are grown and monitored over several days in our lab, so the healthiest one can be chosen. (Genetic testing available if advised.)
Fertilised embryos are cultured for 3 to 5 days in our laboratory under carefully controlled conditions. Our embryologists assess development daily. The best-quality embryo is selected for transfer into the uterus — a simple, painless procedure performed without anaesthesia. Remaining viable embryos can be frozen for future use.
Embryo Transfer
The best-quality embryo is gently placed into the uterus — quick and usually painless.
Pregnancy Test & Follow-Up Care
A blood test after about two weeks, with caring support throughout the wait.
Approximately 14 days after embryo transfer, a blood test (beta-hCG) confirms whether pregnancy has been achieved. Our team provides support and guidance throughout this waiting period. If the cycle is successful, you will be monitored with early pregnancy scans before being referred to your obstetrician.

The days after your transfer — often called the "two-week wait" — can feel long. Here's what's normal, and how to care for yourself.
We check in with you throughout the wait — and your blood test on day ~14 gives the clearest answer.
Success in IVF depends on many personal factors — no honest clinic can promise a number for everyone. What we can promise is realistic, transparent guidance based on your own diagnosis.

Understanding what influences IVF helps you and your specialist plan realistically. The main factors:
Egg quantity and quality change over time; age is one of the biggest factors.
Healthier eggs and sperm improve the odds.
Strong, well-developing embryos are more likely to implant.
A healthy uterine lining supports implantation.
Issues like endometriosis or hormonal imbalances can play a role.
Weight, smoking, alcohol, and stress all matter — and many are within your control.
Your specialist reviews all of these together to give you an honest, personalised picture.
Fertility care that combines medical expertise, advanced treatment, and compassionate support.
A skilled team specialised in reproductive medicine.
International-standard embryo culture & cryopreservation.
Every IVF protocol designed around you.
Emotional support at every step of your journey.
KK Nagar & Mylapore, with flexible scheduling.
IVF and ICSI are closely related — the difference is how the egg is fertilised. Your specialist recommends the right one based on your diagnosis.
Egg and sperm are placed together in the lab and fertilisation happens naturally. Often the first choice when sperm quality is healthy.
A single healthy sperm is injected directly into the egg. Usually recommended when there are concerns about sperm count, movement, or shape — or after previous fertilisation didn't work.
The honest bottom line: You don't have to choose alone. After your evaluation, your Kanaa specialist recommends whichever gives you the best realistic chance — and explains why.
IVF is widely used and generally safe, but like any medical treatment it has some risks. We believe in telling you honestly, so there are no surprises.
At Kanaa, careful monitoring at every step is how we keep risks low. Your specialist will walk you through anything relevant to your plan — please ask us anything.
