WHAT IS LAPAROSCOPY

Laparoscopy — Minimally Invasive, Maximum Insight

Also known as keyhole surgery — a way to look inside your abdomen and pelvis without large incisions.

Laparoscopy is a type of surgical procedure that allows the surgeon to access the inside of the abdomen and pelvis without having to make large incisions in the skin. It's also known as keyhole surgery or minimally invasive surgery.

Large incisions can be avoided because the surgeon uses a laparoscope — a small tube with a light source and a camera — which relays images of the inside of the abdomen or pelvis to a television monitor.

Minimally Invasive

Small incisions instead of large ones, meaning little or no scarring.

Diagnostic and Treatment in One

If a problem is found, it can often be corrected in the same procedure.

Guided by a Camera

Your surgeon sees clearly, in real time, on a video screen.

THE PROCEDURE

What Happens During a Laparoscopy

1
Anaesthesia
The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthesia.
2
Gas Insufflation
Your abdomen is gently inflated with carbon dioxide gas to create space for the surgeon to see clearly.
3
Laparoscope Insertion
The laparoscope is inserted through small incisions.
4
Examination
The surgeon views the interior of your pelvic cavity on a video screen, looking for possible causes of infertility such as abnormalities of the uterus and ovaries, blocked fallopian tubes, scar tissue, fibroids, or endometriosis (which can only be confirmed via laparoscopy).
5
Tubal Patency Check
A dye called methylene blue is instilled into the uterus to confirm whether your tubes are open.
6
Treatment, If Needed
If a problem is found, it may be corrected in the same procedure — this becomes an operative laparoscopy, using small surgical instruments passed through the laparoscope or another small incision.
7
Closure
The surgeon closes the incisions with a few stitches. There is usually little or no scarring.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the indications of laparoscopy?
Laparoscopy is recommended for the following conditions in infertility: adenomyoma, adhesions, endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, pelvic floor disorders and pelvic inflammatory disease, and prior bilateral tubal blockage seen on HSG.
Is laparoscopy for infertility painful?
You'll be under general anaesthesia during the procedure itself, so you won't feel it. Afterward, some soreness and shoulder tip pain (from the gas used) is common but usually mild and temporary.
What are the advantages of laparoscopy in infertility?
Laparoscopy can both diagnose and treat certain causes of infertility in the same procedure, including confirming endometriosis, which can only be diagnosed this way — with little or no scarring afterward.
What is the estimated time of rest after laparoscopy?
Pending a doctor's confirmed guidance on recovery time before publishing — this needs real clinical input, not a general guess.
What are the side effects of laparoscopy?
Most side effects are mild — soreness, shoulder tip pain, or fatigue for a day or two. Your specialist will discuss anything specific to your procedure.
How soon can you try to conceive after laparoscopy?
Pending a doctor's confirmed guidance on conception timing before publishing — this needs real clinical input, not a general guess.
