WHAT IS HYSTEROSCOPY

Hysteroscopy — See Inside, and Treat if Needed

A procedure to examine the inside of your uterus, with the option to treat certain findings in the same visit.

Hysteroscopy is a procedure used to examine the inside of the uterus, usually taking between 5 and 30 minutes.

In some cases, a small tissue sample from the uterine lining may be removed for further testing — known as an endometrial biopsy.

If findings need treatment, such as fibroids or polyps, fine surgical instruments can be passed along the hysteroscope to treat the abnormal tissue — often in the same procedure.

See and Treat in One Visit

Many findings can be treated during the same procedure, without a separate appointment.

Quick

Usually takes between 5 and 30 minutes.

Guided by a Camera

A light and camera let your specialist see clearly and precisely.

THE PROCEDURE

What Happens During a Hysteroscopy

1
Preparation
A speculum may be used to hold the vagina open, though this isn't always needed. The vagina and cervix are cleaned with antiseptic.
2
Hysteroscope Insertion
A hysteroscope (a long, thin tube with a light and camera) is passed through the cervix into the uterus — you may feel some cramping and discomfort as it passes through.
3
Fluid Distension
Fluid such as saline or glycine is gently pumped into the uterus, making it easier to see clearly inside.
4
Examination
The camera sends live pictures to a monitor, so your specialist can spot any abnormalities.
5
Treatment, If Needed
If treatable findings like fibroids or polyps are found, fine instruments can be passed through the hysteroscope to treat them in the same visit.
6
Tissue Sample, If Needed
A small tissue sample (endometrial biopsy) may be taken for further testing.
WHEN IS IT NEEDED

Resection of Uterine Septum

Removal of Endometrial Polyps

Hysteroscopic Myomectomy

Fibroid removal

WHAT'S INVOLVED

What's Involved in This Visit

There are three types of hysteroscopy, depending on what's needed:

  • Office Hysteroscopy — Done without anaesthesia, in the outpatient department (OPD).
  • Diagnostic Hysteroscopy — Done under anaesthesia or mild sedation, in the operation theatre.
  • Operative Hysteroscopy — Done under anaesthesia, involving treatment such as removal of polyps or fibroids.

Your specialist will explain which type applies to your situation. Starting price to be confirmed by the clinic.

RISKS & WHAT TO EXPECT

Risks & What to Expect

Common and usually mild

  • Cramping and discomfort as the hysteroscope passes through the cervix
  • Mild cramping or spotting afterward

Less common, worth knowing

  • Infection — Uncommon, similar to other procedures involving the cervix.
  • Uterine PerforationPending a doctor's exact wording before publishing — this line was added by the drafting process, not sourced from the live page.
  • Reaction to Distension Fluid — Rare, but possible with the fluid used to expand the uterus.

This is exactly why we monitor closely throughout — please let us know about any concerns beforehand.

How long does it take to recover from hysteroscopy?
