An HSG (hysterosalpingogram) at Kanaa Fertility is a quick x-ray procedure that checks the shape of your uterine cavity and whether your fallopian tubes are open — done between day 3 and day 10 of your cycle. Two clinics in KK Nagar & Mylapore, with in-person & online consultations.

WHAT IS HSG

HSG — Checking Your Uterus and Fallopian Tubes

A well-established x-ray procedure, done early in your cycle, to check for blockages or abnormalities.

A hysterosalpingogram is an x-ray procedure to assess the uterine cavity and the patency (openness) of the fallopian tubes. It's done between day 3 and day 10 of your menstrual cycle.

This procedure helps diagnose any abnormality in the shape of the uterus, or any blockage in the fallopian tubes.

Checks Two Things at Once

Both the shape of your uterus and whether your tubes are open.

Timed Early in Your Cycle

Done between day 3 and 10, before ovulation.

Quick and Well-Established

A routine, widely-used diagnostic test in fertility care.

THE PROCEDURE

What Happens During an HSG

1
Positioning
You lie down in the x-ray room.
2
Preparation
The genital area is cleaned with antiseptic solution and draped.
3
Speculum & Catheter Insertion
A speculum is inserted to visualise the cervix, and a thin metal tube is inserted into the uterine cavity.
4
Dye Injection & X-Ray
A radio-opaque dye is injected through the tube, and an x-ray is taken.
5
Diagnosis
The images help identify any abnormality in the shape of the uterus, or any blockage in the fallopian tubes.
WHEN IS IT NEEDED

When Is an HSG Recommended?

Your specialist may recommend an HSG when:

Uterine Shape Concerns

When there's a possibility of an abnormally shaped uterus.

Before Considering IUI or IVF

To rule out tubal or uterine factors before starting treatment.

WHAT'S INVOLVED

What's Involved in This Visit

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

When would an HSG be needed?
As part of a fertility workup — especially to check for tubal blockages or uterine shape concerns — often before considering IUI or IVF.
Is a hysterosalpingogram painful?
Most women experience cramping rather than significant pain, and it's usually brief.
Can an HSG exam open blocked tubes?
Pending a doctor's confirmed clinical position before publishing — this is a genuinely debated point in fertility medicine, not a routine review item.
When is HSG not done?
Pending a doctor's complete, confirmed list of contraindications before publishing — this is safety-relevant and shouldn't be a partial guess.
What are the risks associated with HSG?
Most side effects are mild, like cramping or spotting. Less commonly, there's a small risk of infection or reaction to the dye — your specialist will discuss this with you beforehand.
What are the alternatives to HSG?
Pending clinical sign-off on which alternatives to name — same hold as the Alternatives section above.
